| Tests to expect during pregnancy | Problems | delivery & birth

Congratulations on achieving pregnancy!

This can be the most exciting time in your surrogacy journey. Sometimes, a surrogate mother will take a home pregnancy test that reveals a positive result before the doctor's ordered beta blood test. When this happens, the surrogate may try to be creative when she shares the good news with the expecting parents. This can be such an amazing time for the surrogate mother and intended mother to create a very special bond. Over the next nine months, there will be many waves of physical and emotional changes.

Birth Defects Testing - What Are Birth Defects Tests?

Birth defects tests are done during pregnancy to look for possible problems with the baby (fetus). Birth defects develop when something is wrong with the genetic material (genes or chromosomes), an organ, or body chemistry. A birth defect may have only a mild impact on a child's life, or it can have a major effect on quality of life or life span.

Birth defects include:

Genetic disorders, such as Down syndrome and trisomy 18.
Diseases passed in a family (inherited), such as Tay-Sachs, sickle cell anemia, and cystic fibrosis.
Structural problems, such as heart defects and neural tube defects, including spina bifida.

Pregnant women and their partners can choose whether to have a test for birth defects. If you choose to have a test, you may want to talk with a genetic counselor. The counselor can talk with you about the reasons to have or not have the test. He or she can also help you find other resources for support and decision-making.

What if something goes wrong?

Each pregnancy is unique and different and sometimes there are complications. While some complications are "standard" and treated easily, there are others that are much more involved. Your doctor has screened for any diseases or illnesses that could have been known before becoming pregnant; however sometimes complications are unavoidable. With proper prenatal care, most pregnancies end in a healthy delivery for both "surro" mom and baby.

  Baby Just After Birth

Since each delivery is different, many women choose to prepare a birthing plan. A birthing plan is designed to make the delivery experience more predictable and enjoyable for everyone. Some surrogate mothers want a natural delivery, while others would prefer medication. Others are more open to holistic alternitives such as maternity acupunture. This can be a natural and safe method for pregnancy, inducing labor at home and getting effective relief from labor pains. Click Here to Learn More!
